Jeans, leggings and Uggs are the standard issue for most young girls. So, when a daughter gets to wear a whimsical dress, and dad gets to dust off his tuxedo, excitement mounts. Over 320 fathers, daughters, and other special family members attended the annual Sugar Plum dance on December 3, 2011 at Hager Hall Conference and Events Center.
Girls from kindergarten to high school along with their dads, grandfathers and uncles basked in an evening of hors devour, dancing and holiday festivities. Barbara Ingram School of Arts presented a holiday “GLEE style” performance while Simply Yours DJ got everyone on the floor. Even mothers got a glimpse of the night while they snapped pictures of their daughters during the grand red carpet entrance.
For many fathers, the event is a special time to bond with their daughters. “It’s the closest thing a father gets to taking his daughter to the prom,”
said planning committee member, Keith Craver. Craver has been escorting his daughters, ages six and eight, to the dance for five years. Ted Athey, father of five-year-old twin girls, Megan and Rachel (pictured right) also viewed the night as distinctive. “These girls are now spoiled. No prom could ever top this.” Mother of the twins, pediatrician Kristina Athey, MD, savored the memory by taking photos of dad, granddad and the girls during the night’s red carpet kick off.
The event would not have been a success without the generous support of corporate sponsors including Julia Manor, HDH Group Insurance, Antietam Pediatrics, Maryland Physicians Care, Bella Salon, The Columbia Bank, Rust-oleum, and Susquehanna Bank. Proceeds from the Sugar Plum dance will be used in support of programs and services at Meritus Medical Center.
